TL;DR

Taskusanakirja is designed to protect your privacy. The Free Edition works completely offline and collects no data whatsoever. The Pro Edition only connects to the internet to validate your license, collecting just your license key and a hashed machine identifier for license enforcement - we never see your dictionary searches or usage patterns. We don’t track you, sell your data, or share it with anyone except essential service providers like Gumroad for payment processing. All dictionary data and searches stay on your device. We don’t use analytics in the app, send crash reports, or auto-update. You have full rights to access, correct, or delete any personal data we hold by contacting andrew@siilikuin.com. Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Taskusanakirja (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our software, website, and related services (collectively, the “Service”). Your privacy is a core principle of our design.

1. Our Privacy Commitment

Taskusanakirja is built to be a private, offline-first tool. The core dictionary and search functionalities are processed entirely on your local device. We do not track your search queries or dictionary usage, and an internet connection is not required for the application’s primary features.

2. What Information We Collect and Why

Data Minimization Principle: We are committed to data minimization - we only collect personal information that is necessary, relevant, and limited to what is needed for the purposes outlined in this policy. We do not collect information “just in case” it might be useful later.

We collect the minimum information necessary to provide and improve our Service. Collection practices differ between the application, our website, and the license purchase process.

2.1 The Taskusanakirja Application

  • Free Edition: The Free Edition does not collect or transmit any personal information or usage data. All operations are performed locally on your device.

  • Pro Edition License Validation: An internet connection is required for Pro license activation and periodic validation. However, a successfully activated Pro license will continue to function offline for up to 30 days before requiring revalidation. This offline grace period is subject to change with suitable notice. During validation processes, we collect the following:

    • Your Pro license key: To verify that the license is valid.
    • A one-way, cryptographically secure hash of a machine identifier: This is used solely to enforce our one-device-per-license policy and is not reversible or tied to your personal identity. No other identifying information about your device is collected.

  • Pro Edition Data Downloads: An internet connection is required to download the inflections database. We may log standard connection information (such as an IP address) to monitor for security and prevent abuse, but this data is not tied to your license key.

2.2 Purchasing a Pro License

Payment processing is handled by our authorized third-party reseller, Gumroad, which acts as the Merchant of Record.

We do not receive, process, or store your payment information, such as credit card details.

To deliver your license, Gumroad provides us with your email address, a transaction ID, and the purchase date.

2.3 Our Website (https://taskusanakirja.com)

When you visit our website, we may collect standard technical information to ensure its functionality and to improve our services:

  • Standard web logs: This may include your IP address, browser type, referring pages, and timestamps.
  • Analytics data: We use aggregated and anonymized usage data to understand website traffic patterns.
  • Cookies: We use only essential cookies required for site functionality (such as maintaining your session). We do not use tracking, advertising, or third-party analytics cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though this may affect site functionality.

2.4 What We Don’t Collect

To protect your privacy, Taskusanakirja does not:

  • Automatically check for or install updates
  • Collect crash reports or diagnostic data
  • Track your dictionary searches or lookup history
  • Monitor how you use the application
  • Send any telemetry or usage analytics from the app

The application will only connect to the internet when you explicitly:

  • Activate or validate your Pro license
  • Download the inflections database (Pro Edition)"

2.5 License Transfer

License Transfers: If you need to transfer your Pro license to a new device (due to hardware changes, OS reinstalls, or device replacement), you must contact andrew@siilikuin.com. You will be required to provide your complete, original license key for verification. For this process, we collect:

  • Your complete, original license key for verification
  • Communication records to document the transfer request
  • The new device’s hashed machine identifier when you reactivate

Important: We do not have a process for license recovery if you lose your license key completely. If you cannot provide your complete, original license key, we cannot assist with license transfers. Please keep your license key secure and backed up.

This information is used solely to verify your identity as the legitimate license holder and to maintain the integrity of our one-device-per-license policy. We retain records of license transfers for the duration of your license validity plus one year.

Refund Processing: If you request a refund, we collect and verify your purchase information and maintain records as described in our data retention policy (see Section 5.4 below).

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following specific purposes:

  • To Provide and Maintain the Service:

    • Validate and activate your Pro license key.
    • Allow Pro users to download necessary databases.
    • Provide customer support and respond to your inquiries.
    • License transfer records: Retained for the duration of your license validity plus 1 year

  • For Communication:

    • Send you your Pro license purchase confirmation via email.
    • Notify Pro license holders of critical software updates or service announcements.

  • To Improve Our Services:

    • Analyze aggregated website traffic to improve user experience.
    • Diagnose and fix technical issues related to our website or license validation services.

3.1 Marketing and Promotional Communications

  • We send transactional emails only (license delivery, critical updates affecting your service)
  • We do not send promotional or marketing emails unless you explicitly opt in
  • You may unsubscribe from non-essential communications at any time by contacting andrew@siilikuin.com

4. Information Sharing

We are committed to protecting your privacy and do not sell your personal information.

  • We Do Not Sell Your Information: We never sell, rent, or trade your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
  • Third-Party Services: We share information only with essential service providers, such as:
    • Gumroad: Our payment processor, which handles your transaction.
    • Email Services: To deliver your license key and support communications.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or a valid governmental request to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or the public.

Data Processing Agreements: We maintain appropriate data processing agreements with all our service providers who handle personal data, including Cloudflare, as required under GDPR Article 28.

Our website may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these external sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any personal information.

5. Data Storage, Security, and Retention

5.1 Local Storage

All core dictionary data, configuration files (including the encrypted license.bin), and downloaded databases are stored exclusively on your local device.

5.2 Our Systems

  • We use encrypted transmission (HTTPS) for all communications with our license validation and data download servers.
  • We implement secure storage with strict access controls for the limited data we maintain.
  • We retain data only as long as necessary:
    • Purchase Records: Retained for 7 years as required for tax and accounting purposes
    • Support Communications: Retained for up to 2 years or until resolution of any ongoing issues, whichever is longer
    • License Validation Logs: Automatically deleted after 90 days
    • Email Addresses: Retained as long as your license is active, plus 1 year after expiration for reactivation purposes

5.3 Data Breach Response

In the unlikely event of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will:

  • Notify affected users via email within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach
  • Provide details about what information was compromised
  • Outline steps we are taking to address the breach
  • Recommend actions you can take to protect yourself
  • Report to relevant supervisory authorities as required by law

We offer a simple 14-day refund policy. To initiate a refund request, please reply to your original purchase receipt email from Gumroad or contact us directly at andrew@siilikuin.com with your full license key and proof of purchase. When you request a refund for a Pro license purchase:

  • Refund Request Communications: Retained for up to 3 years from the date of the original purchase for accounting, tax compliance, and dispute resolution purposes
  • License Revocation Records: When a refund is processed, we maintain records of the revoked license key indefinitely to prevent reuse and protect against fraud
  • Purchase Verification Data: Transaction details provided during refund requests are retained according to our standard purchase record retention policy (7 years for tax and accounting purposes)

Legal Basis (GDPR): This processing is based on:

  • Legal obligation (tax and accounting record requirements)
  • Legitimate interest (fraud prevention and business record keeping)

You retain the right to request deletion of refund-related communications after our legal retention obligations have been met.

6. Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your personal information:

6.1 Access and Portability

  • Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Receive your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format

6.2 Correction and Deletion

  • Correct any inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your information (“right to be forgotten”), subject to our legal retention requirements

6.3 Processing Restrictions

  • Object to or restrict certain types of processing
  • Withdraw consent where we rely on consent for processing

6.4 Automated Decision-Making

We do not use automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

6.6 Complaints

If you are in the EEA and believe we have not addressed your concerns adequately, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.

7. Children’s Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected such information, we will take steps to delete it.

8. International Users and Governing Law

8.1 Governing Law and Consumer Rights

Consumer Rights Protection: If you are a consumer, you have the protection of the mandatory consumer protection laws of the country in which you reside. Nothing in this Privacy Policy limits, waives, or overrides these rights under your local law.

Governing Law: To the extent not inconsistent with your mandatory local consumer protection rights, this Agreement is governed by the laws of Finland. By using the Service, you consent to the processing of your information in jurisdictions where our servers may be located. If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the GDPR, and we are committed to upholding them.

8.2 Dispute Resolution

Consumer Rights: If you are a consumer, you may be entitled to bring disputes in the courts of your country of residence under your local consumer protection laws. Nothing in this section limits these rights.

General Jurisdiction: Subject to any mandatory consumer protection rights in your jurisdiction, any legal action must be brought in the competent courts of Finland.

8.3 Lawful Basis for Processing

For users in the European Economic Area, we process personal data under the following lawful bases:

  • Contract Performance: Processing your license key and email to deliver the Pro Edition service you purchased
  • Legitimate Interest: Ensuring security, preventing fraud, and improving our services through anonymized analytics
  • Legal Obligation: Retaining transaction records as required by tax and accounting laws
  • Consent: Where specifically requested for optional services or communications

8.4 Data Storage Locations and Transfers

Our services utilize Cloudflare’s global infrastructure, which may process and store data in multiple regions including the United States. For users in the European Economic Area, we ensure appropriate safeguards for international data transfers through:

  • Our service providers’ (including Cloudflare’s) implementation of Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission
  • Our service providers’ adherence to the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework where applicable

These mechanisms ensure your data receives equivalent protection regardless of where it is processed.

9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have specific rights, including the right to know what information we collect and the right to request its deletion. As stated, we do not sell your personal information.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on our website with an updated effective date.

  • Minor Changes: Will be posted on this page with an updated revision date
  • Material Changes: We will notify Pro license holders via email and/or prominent notice within the application at least 30 days before the changes take effect
  • Version History: Previous versions of this policy are available upon request
